The reason Bunn makes such a good cup of coffee is because the water is preheated and dispensed through the large spray head at a constant, optimal temperature. Our first velocity brew lasted around 7 years, and yes, ultimately developed a leak. We have a Mr Coffee, 10 cup in our RV, which I brought into the house while thinking about a replacement and we brewed 2 pots - with and without the 'strong brew' option, both brewed a similar strength coffee, but both slightly bitter, more decidedly with the 'strong brew' option which slows down the brew time.
I haven't done scientific temperature measurement, but I understand the reason Bunn makes a better tasting cup of coffee. I'd like to have gotten more than 7 years out of our first velocity brew, but the price is reasonable for such great coffee.
One downside is no automatic shutoff for the pot warmer. The fancy timer stuff is pretty useless on a Bunn because a full pot brews in 3-4 minutes. The other downside is they need to be turned off completely if you are not using it for more than a couple of days because the tank will run dry. This is definitely a coffee maker for those who brew at least daily.
I did some research looking at other coffee makers, and there's lots of other machines out there, but the Bunn is hands down the best tasting coffee. Especially at this price level, I'm surprised Bunn is not consistently top rated. It does not have a clock, won't wake you up or allow you to start the brew cycle from your Bluetooth device, but it does make a smooth, delicious cup of hot coffee in a very short time.
